Even if you never eat or drink in your car, dust and grime will still accumulate over time. Use these tips to give your car a good DIY detailing this spring!
Start From Scratch
To really deep clean your car, you’ll first need to take everything out. Not only will this ensure that you can really clean every nook and cranny, but it will also give you a chance to organize the items that should go back in (registration, insurance, first aid kit, etc.) and remove things that should be stored elsewhere or thrown away.
Clean the Dash and Steering Wheel
Next, remove dirt and debris from the dashboard and steering wheel. For the most part, you’ll be able to get this done with a few damp microfiber cloths. For small crevices, use a dry, unused toothbrush to scrape away built-up dirt. If your dash and wheel are covered in leather, be sure to condition them afterward.
Clean the Console
This will probably be one of the trickier spots to clean because there are so many small areas where crumbs, spills, and clutter can accumulate. In addition to the toothbrush and damp microfiber cloth, a small handheld vacuum with attachments will come in handy here. You can purchase one online for under $50 and use it to suck up every last crumb and speck of dirt throughout the car.
Tackle the Seats
If you have cloth seats, you can spot treat them with a DIY mix of water, vinegar, and dish soap. Alternatively, if you have a portable upholstery cleaner, that will come in handy for keeping cloth car seats spotless. If you have leather or synthetic leather upholstery, you have it a bit easier! Give the seats a thorough vacuum, then use a leather-safe solution to clean the seats before treating them to conditioner.

Vacuum the Floor
Though a handheld vacuum works well for most of your car, it’s probably worth it to bring your full-size vacuum or shop vac out with an extension cord to clean up the floors. Remove your floor mats and vacuum off as much debris as you can. If you have carpet floor mats, a cleaning solution or a portable upholstery cleaner will help you get out any lingering stains. If you have all-weather/rubber floor mats, scrub them with a little dish soap and an unused dish brush before giving them a good rinse. They’ll be good as new!
