A great way to save this year on holiday décor could be making your own Christmas stockings from recyclable materials. For this, you’ll need an old sweater, a large sock, yarn, a large needle, scissors, and a pom-pom maker if you’re just feeling a little extra festive.
Step 1
On a flat table, lay out your sweater and place a large sock in the middle of the sweater. About one or two inches from the sweater, mimic the shape of the outline of the sock with a marker.
Step 2
Cut through your outline of the sock on both sides of the sweater. The end result should look similar to the shape of a stocking.
Step 3
Using the threaded needle, stitch together the two sides of the sweater around the perimeter. Be sure to keep the top open so that your stocking can be stuffed.
Step 4
About an inch from the top of the stocking, fold the material down toward the bottom of the stocking to create a brim feature. Stitch this down on both sides.
Step 5
Now it is time to create a loop so that your stocking can hang on the mantle. For this, you will need to create a braid out of the yarn. Sew this piece on to the stocking the way you would sew a button.
